Before 1980 they used to think that Valdiguié was the same grape as Gamay from Beaujolais (France), so they used to also call it Napa Gamay or Gamay 15. But it’s really the same grape as Gros Auxerrois from Languedoc-Roussillon (France). This Valdiguié from Monterey, California is magenta in color and light bodied. Notes of raspberries, pomegranate, lilac, and baking spices. The confusion of Valdiguié’s origin is easy to see here, because it is pretty similar to a Beaujolais. For a $10 wine it’s serviceable and fun. Serve slightly chilled.
